Just like those intrepid settlers from my favorite childhood video game, Oregon Trail (I’m talking the green and white version, not the upgrade to color) we began our trip west in St. Louis. We were visiting our good friends Za and Josh from our Pun Pun Internship in Thailand. After only a few minutes at their house a huge weight was lifted of us. We felt like we could be ourselves again. We sat around in our Thai fisherman pants, talking about real stories from the road,  not just “what’s the craziest thing you ate”,  and it felt great. It was so natural compared to the time we had just spent interacting with my college friends. I made clear how much we had really changed.

Atlantic seaboard bonanza

For about two weeks after Vermont we ran the gauntlet from Maine to North Carolina, visiting friends and family along the way. It feels strange to write about these domestic locales, so let’s just stick to the highlights.

Finishing what we started

I have to be honest, this travel blog has been the last thing on our minds recently, and in fact I haven’t given it two thoughts since getting back to San Francisco three months ago… that is, until I received this message from a reader last week:

“hi, for the sake of all of us who have read you blog with interest over the past couple of years, would you please update your blog and at least close it out properly? the story is incomplete…”

You know what Jeff from San Francisco, you’re right. Not only because we are leaving readers like you hanging, but because the cathartic act of putting pen to paper – metaphorically of course – and writing about the transition travel life to “real life” will actually help make sense of this period. So I have decided to revive the blog, at least periodically, to document this transition –  which as it turns out is BY FAR the strangest and scariest adventure of our whole trip. More to come.

Wholesome Vermont fun!

What better way to ease into the US than whiling away a few weeks with family in the picturesque countryside of Vermont. Get ready for a heavy dose of Americana…

The last stop – U.S.A

At long last, our final destination – the land of milk and honey. After 26 months, 34 countries and almost $100,000 later, we are finally back in the States…for good. How to sum up over two years of life on the road? I don’t think we can fully express what a profound effect this experience has had on our lives. Nor will we try. Luckily, we are easing back into reality by taking a cross country road trip from the east to west coast. All we can say is that we are looking forward to this new chapter, and for the opportunity to visit our dearly missed family and friends. Thank you world, it’s been a great ride. Next stop, America.

Old stuff

Patzcuaro is a lovely city situated in the highlands of Michoacan Mexico. Surrounded by pine forests and lakes, and with beautiful crafts from the local indigenous people, is a popular weekend spot for Chilangos to escape the craziness of Mexico City. It’s just about the last place we expected to encounter the violence that has been plaguing Mexico. We couldn’t be more wrong.
